Windhoek West Leadership Meeting Highlights Service Delivery and Development Priorities

Windhoek West Leadership Meeting Highlights Service Delivery and Development Priorities. Windhoek West Constituency Councillor Emma Muteka paid a courtesy visit to Windhoek Mayor Sakarias Uunona on Wednesday to discuss development priorities and service delivery matters affecting residents in her constituency.

The meeting focused on several key issues including the maintenance and safety of public parks, the management of informal vendors, proposed amendments to municipal by laws, and public transport access for students attending the University of Namibia and the Namibia University of Science and Technology.

On park management, both leaders acknowledged growing safety concerns in public spaces. They agreed to strengthen cooperation to ensure parks are properly maintained and remain safe for community use.

Public transport for university students was also discussed. Strategic Executive for Urban and Transport Planning Pierre van Rensburg said the City currently subsidises bus services to keep fares affordable. However, he stated that available resources are not sufficient to introduce a dedicated student transport service at this stage.

Van Rensburg requested the proposed schedule prepared by the constituency together with the Student Representative Councils of both universities for further review. He added that the City will continue engaging the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development regarding public transport subsidies.

On informal trading, Strategic Executive for Economic Development and Community Services Zurilea Steenkamp said municipal by laws require vendors to operate within designated trading areas. She noted that some vendors have expanded beyond these zones, and emphasised the need for ongoing engagement to encourage compliance.

Mayor Uunona welcomed the visit, noting that Councillor Muteka is the first constituency councillor to pay a courtesy call since his election. He encouraged submission of proposed by law amendments from residents for further consultation.

City officials and constituency representatives agreed to maintain communication as discussions continue on service delivery priorities affecting Windhoek West residents.
