Windhoek Junior Council Calls on Opuwo Learners to Become Community CChangemakers. The City of Windhoek’s Junior Council has encouraged learners at Opuwo Primary School to embrace leadership, compassion and service during a courtesy visit aimed at inspiring young people to make a positive difference in their communities.

The visit highlighted the work of the Junior Council, which consists of 76 junior councillors representing schools across Windhoek. Through outreach programmes and community initiatives, the council provides young people with opportunities to develop leadership skills while contributing to their communities.

Junior Mayor Councillor Kovii Kambai shared some of the initiatives undertaken by the council, including programmes supporting vulnerable members of society.

Among these is an elderly outreach programme, where junior councillors visit old-age homes, spend time with senior citizens, prepare meals and provide gifts.

Kambai urged learners to support older members of their communities and take responsibility for helping those around them.

“Help the elders. Fetch firewood for them. Take care of them. Be a changemaker,” he told the learners.

He also highlighted the Junior Council’s cancer project, which supports young people affected by cancer. Kambai stressed the importance of supporting people facing difficult circumstances.

Food security was another area highlighted during the engagement. Kambai spoke about Farm Okukuna, located outside Windhoek, and encouraged learners and teachers to establish small gardens at their schools and homes.

The visit also gave learners an opportunity to ask questions about the Junior Council and the qualities required of its members.

Helena Ndeutapo, Community Development Officer and Junior Council Coordinator at the City of Windhoek, told learners that responsible leadership starts with values and integrity. “Do not steal,” she said, using the example of learners taking textbooks or money at school.

Ndeutapo emphasised that the values young people develop while growing up can influence how they conduct themselves when they later take responsibility for resources intended to serve communities and the country.
