Windhoek Launches Campaign Against Illegal Land Grabbing in Samora Machel Constituency. The City of Windhoek has launched a community engagement and education campaign in the Samora Machel Constituency aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of illegal land grabbing.
The initiative, which began today in the Goreangab area, will run over four weekends until 11 April 2026. Sessions will cover several neighborhoods, including Kahumba Kandola, Thlabanelo, Hadino Hishongwa, Peter Nanyemba, and Brenden Simbwaye.
Community leaders and residents attended the opening sessions, which focused on empowering neighborhood committee members with knowledge to address land-related challenges. The campaign emphasizes the risks associated with illegal land occupation, particularly the dangers of constructing homes in riverbeds and beneath power lines.
Residents were encouraged to follow proper procedures when extending or renovating their structures by visiting the City of Windhoek’s Human Settlements offices to complete the necessary forms and obtain approval. Officials highlighted that adherence to these processes ensures safety and compliance with urban planning regulations.
The campaign also addressed the importance of keeping access roads clear in informal settlements. Blocking roads, officials warned, could hinder emergency services such as fire and ambulance responses. In addition, residents were urged to establish neighborhood watch groups and report illegal activities to the City.
By combining education with community involvement, the initiative seeks to strengthen local capacity to manage land issues responsibly. The City of Windhoek reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and collaboration, noting that sustainable urban development depends on active participation from residents.
The campaign continues over the coming weekends, with further sessions planned to reinforce awareness and encourage lawful practices in land use across the constituency.
