Windhoek Launches 2026 Mayoral Clean-Up Campaign in Havana Settlement. The City of Windhoek officially launched the 2026 Mayoral Clean-up Campaign in the Havana informal settlement, Moses Garoeb Constituency, on 23 February 2026. Mayor Cllr Sakarias Uunona presided over the launch, introducing the initiative under the theme “Go Green, Skip the Plastic.”
The campaign forms part of the City’s ongoing commitment to environmental care and community involvement. Addressing residents, Mayor Uunona emphasized that the initiative extends beyond cleaning streets and open spaces. “This campaign is a movement, a citywide call to action that invites each of us to take ownership of our environment and contribute meaningfully to environmental stewardship,” he said.
In line with the theme, MTC Namibia made a significant contribution of 4,000 reusable shopping bags valued at over N$300,000. The bags will be distributed during the campaign to encourage residents to reduce reliance on single-use plastics. Tim Ekandjo, MTC’s Chief Brand, Marketing, Communication and Sustainability Officer, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility, noting that caring for the environment is essential.
Other businesses, including Shorpire-Usave and Namica Super Market, also responded to the Mayor’s call for support, demonstrating the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing sustainability.
The next clean-up event is scheduled for 07 March 2026 around the Havana 4-way. Mayor Uunona has called on all community members to participate actively, underscoring that collective action is key to keeping Windhoek clean and resilient.
The campaign highlights the City’s broader vision of promoting environmental awareness, reducing plastic waste, and fostering civic responsibility. By engaging residents, businesses, and institutions, Windhoek aims to build a culture of sustainability that strengthens both community pride and urban resilience.
