Germany and Namibia Deepen Sports Cooperation to Empower Youth and Drive Development. Namibia and Germany are strengthening ties through sports diplomacy, following a high-level visit led by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Mr. Kai Wegner, to Windhoek this week. The delegation, received by the Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC), Hon. Dr. Sanet L. Steenkamp, was joined by the Mayor of Windhoek, Her Worship Cllr. Ndeshihafela Larandja, to explore new avenues of cooperation in sports, education, and cultural exchange.

The discussions focused on expanding sporting initiatives between the two nations, including basketball development projects with ALBA Berlin and soccer collaborations with institutions such as Riverheights. Both parties emphasized the importance of sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment, education, and cross-cultural learning.

A key highlight of the visit will take place on Sunday, 19 October 2025, when Mr. Ingo Weiss, President of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) and Treasurer of FIBA, visits the Basketball Artists School (BAS) Foundation in Katutura. The foundation provides academic support, sports training, life skills, and daily meals to more than 150 learners each week.

During the visit, Mr. Weiss will tour the BAS facility, meet with its management and trustees, and engage directly with learners benefiting from the programme. The initiative showcases how sports partnerships can contribute to education, social inclusion, and long-term youth development.

The collaboration between Namibia and Germany underscores a shared commitment to using sports as a bridge for growth, cooperation, and community transformation. It also reflects Namibia’s growing focus on leveraging international partnerships to expand opportunities for young people across the country.
