Namibian Coaches Commission Advances Sports Education with Accredited Coaching Course. The Namibian Coaches Commission has launched an accredited Sport Coaching Course at the University of Namibia (UNAM) main campus in Windhoek, marking a key milestone in the country’s efforts to professionalize and expand sports education.
The week-long course, which began on Monday and concludes on Friday, has drawn 60 coaches from various sporting disciplines and regions across Namibia. This follows an overwhelming response of more than 300 applications, reflecting growing national interest in structured, accredited coaching education.
The course is facilitated by a team of experts, with the training workbook compiled by Prof. Cilas Wilders (UNAM senior sports scientist and former chairperson of the Namibia Sports Commission), Dr. Vasti Oelofse (educationalist and coach), Andreas Amutenya (performance analyst and coach), and Ronelle Malan (sport scientist). Their collective expertise provides participants with a multidisciplinary foundation in coaching science, performance analysis, and athlete development.
Prof. Wilders revealed that efforts are underway to formally introduce Sports Coaching as an accredited three-year Bachelor of Arts degree at UNAM, a move that would elevate coaching to a recognized academic and professional career path in Namibia.
The event is supported by the Namibian National Olympic Committee, the Namibia Sports Commission, and the Olympic Solidarity Movement, which have all played key roles in advancing coaching standards and capacity building in the region.
By offering accredited education and fostering collaboration between national and academic institutions, the initiative strengthens Namibia’s long-term vision of cultivating skilled coaches capable of enhancing athlete performance across all levels of sport.
