Windhoek and Marracuene Explore Sister City Partnership to Advance Sustainable Development. In a diplomatic gesture aimed at fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development, the Mayor of Marracuene, Mozambique, Ahmad Shafee Sidat, paid an official visit to Windhoek and held discussions with the Mayor of Windhoek, Cllr Ndeshihafela Larandja.

The meeting between the two city leaders focused on establishing a sister city relationship, with a shared commitment to advancing the localization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Both leaders emphasized the importance of regional solidarity and collaboration in addressing common urban challenges and promoting inclusive growth.

Mayor Larandja welcomed the initiative, noting that such a partnership could pave the way for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and joint programmes in areas such as urban planning, youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and community development.

Mayor Sidat’s visit coincided with the ongoing /Ae //Gams Arts & Cultural Festival, giving him a firsthand experience of Windhoek’s cultural richness. Guided by Mayor Larandja, he toured the festival grounds, witnessing vibrant performances, traditional cuisine, and local artisan showcases that reflect Namibia’s diverse heritage.

The engagement concluded with a mutual expression of intent to formalize the partnership, pending further consultations and planning between the respective city councils.
