NUST and THENSA Launch Groundbreaking Initiative to Empower Southern African Entrepreneurs. The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) has teamed up with the Technological Higher Education Network South Africa (THENSA) and six other universities to launch the Entrepreneurship Venture Builder (EVB)—a pioneering programme designed to cultivate a strong entrepreneurial culture in Southern Africa.
This ambitious initiative aims to equip aspiring entrepreneurs—particularly those from universities of technology, historically disadvantaged institutions, and marginalised communities—with the resources and mentorship needed to transform ideas into successful businesses.
At a recent gathering of the founding institutions, EVB Manager, Prof. Michael Twum-Darko, underscored the programme’s transformative mission. He highlighted its role in breaking down barriers that often hinder African entrepreneurs, ensuring they have the tools and networks to thrive in competitive markets.
A key component of the EVB initiative is its Mentor-in-Residence programme, where university experts in technology transfer, innovation, and entrepreneurship provide hands-on guidance. Participants will receive structured support as they develop their Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), refine business models, and move toward full-scale commercialisation.
The EVB is initially hosted at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) but will gradually expand into a multi-campus, decentralised model, bringing innovation hubs closer to entrepreneurs across the region. The founding universities include CPUT, Durban University of Technology, University of Venda, Tshwane University of Technology, NUST, Central University of Technology, and Walter Sisulu University.
The initiative is funded by the Research and Innovation Systems for Africa (RISA) fund, supported by the United Kingdom’s International Development programme. This strategic investment is expected to strengthen campus and community-based innovation, bridge the gap between research and commercialisation, and create sustainable economic opportunities across Southern Africa.
By fostering a dynamic ecosystem of entrepreneurship, NUST and its partners are paving the way for a new generation of African innovators to reshape industries, drive economic growth, and create meaningful change in their communities.
