Windhoek and Berlin Collaborate on Solar Centre to Advance Renewable Energy

Windhoek and Berlin Collaborate on Solar Centre to Advance Renewable Energy. The City of Windhoek’s Electricity Department has launched the Solar Centre Project, an initiative partially funded by the German government through the sister city of Berlin, aimed at strengthening renewable energy adoption in the capital.

At the heart of the project is the Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop, which began on Monday, 16 March 2026, and will conclude on Friday, 20 March 2026. The workshop focuses on capacity development and equipping local professionals with the skills needed to expand solar energy solutions.

During the opening session, Strategic Executive O’Brien Hekandjo presented the Windhoek Solar Centre framework, outlining the technical capabilities of solar systems and highlighting strategic milestones achievable through cooperation. His presentation emphasized the importance of structured collaboration in driving sustainable energy growth.

The sessions are being led by Michael Kavalata, Chief Engineer for Systems and Protection, and co-facilitated by Berit Muller from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sonnenenergie (Solar Centre Berlin). This partnership ensures that international best practices are integrated into local expertise, strengthening Windhoek’s renewable energy capacity.

Once fully operational, the Windhoek Solar Centre will serve as a municipal hub for information, training, and advisory services. It is designed to raise public awareness, provide technical guidance, and support the expansion of solar technology across the city.

Currently, Windhoek has approximately 991 solar systems installed, and the Solar Centre aims to significantly increase this number by offering education and support to streamline adoption. The initiative underscores the role of renewable energy in shaping a sustainable future and highlights the importance of international cooperation in achieving these goals.

The Solar Centre Project represents a milestone in Windhoek’s journey toward sustainability, reinforcing the city’s commitment to renewable energy and capacity building.
