Windhoek Ranked Seventh Most Expensive City in Africa in 2026 Index

Windhoek Ranked Seventh Most Expensive City in Africa in 2026 Index. Windhoek has been ranked as the seventh most expensive city in Africa according to the Numbeo Cost of Living Index for 2026. The ranking places Namibia’s capital among the continent’s cities with the highest living expenses, based on comparative cost-of-living indicators.

Numbeo’s index assesses several factors, including housing rental costs, grocery prices, restaurant expenses and overall consumer purchasing power. Windhoek recorded an index score of 37.7, positioning it within the top ten African cities with the highest cost of living.

Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire ranked first on the list with an index score of 45.7, making it the most expensive city in Africa according to the 2026 index. Addis Ababa followed in second place with a score of 42.7. South African cities featured prominently, with Pretoria ranked third at 41.9, Johannesburg fourth at 40.9 and Cape Town fifth at 40.4.

Harare was ranked sixth with an index score of 38.7, placing it just ahead of Windhoek. Accra followed closely behind Windhoek in eighth place with a score of 36.8, while Tangier ranked ninth at 36.5. Durban completed the top ten list with an index score of 35.6.

The Cost of Living Index provides a comparative overview of consumer prices across cities by evaluating the relative cost of everyday goods and services. While the index does not measure quality of life or income levels directly, it offers insight into price pressures faced by residents in urban centres.

Windhoek’s inclusion in the top ten reflects the cumulative impact of living costs across key household expense categories. The ranking highlights how Namibia’s capital compares with other major African cities in terms of affordability in 2026.

The Numbeo Cost of Living Index is updated periodically and is widely referenced for international cost comparisons across cities and regions.
