Shadikongoro Green Scheme Launches Sunflower Harvest in Kavango East

Shadikongoro Green Scheme Launches Sunflower Harvest in Kavango East. The Shadikongoro Green Scheme in Kavango East has officially begun harvesting 26 hectares of sunflower, with operations commencing on 25 August 2025. The initiative has created 60 temporary jobs, offering much-needed employment to residents in the Mukwe constituency.

According to farm manager Joseph Mutero, the harvest will continue throughout the week, keeping workers engaged until Friday. He noted that the farm is running on schedule, with plans already in place to process the sunflower seeds into cooking oil at the on-site processing plant immediately after harvesting concludes.

“The harvesting started on Monday and will run the whole week,” Mutero explained, emphasizing the smooth rollout of the project. The farm’s processing facilities are expected to add value to the harvest by converting raw sunflower seeds into cooking oil, which will be made available for local consumption

Workers at the scheme expressed their appreciation for the opportunity, highlighting that the project not only provides income but also contributes to food affordability in the region. Many are looking forward to purchasing sunflower oil directly from the farm once production begins.

The Shadikongoro Green Scheme has long played a role in agricultural development in Kavango East, supporting both food production and employment opportunities. By integrating farming with on-site processing, the project is helping to strengthen local value chains and reduce reliance on external suppliers for cooking oil.

As the sunflower harvest progresses, the initiative is expected to highlight the potential of green schemes in boosting regional economies through crop production, job creation, and localized agro-processing.
