Omburu BESS Secures €20 Million Grant to Boost Namibia’s Renewable Energy Future. Namibia’s energy sector has received a major boost with the announcement of a €20 million grant from KfW Development Bank to support the commissioning of the Omburu Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The project is scheduled for completion in 2026 and is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s renewable energy transition.
The Omburu BESS will provide critical storage capacity, enabling greater integration of solar and wind energy into the national grid. By storing excess electricity generated during peak renewable production, the system will help stabilise supply during periods of low generation, ensuring a more reliable and cost-efficient power system.
Namibia has set an ambitious target of achieving 70% renewable energy by 2030. With the country’s abundant solar and wind resources, large-scale storage solutions like Omburu BESS are considered essential to meeting this goal while maintaining energy security and affordability.
The grant from KfW Development Bank underscores international support for Namibia’s clean energy agenda. By investing in advanced storage technology, Namibia positions itself not only to meet domestic demand but also to strengthen its role as a regional energy player.
For the business community, the development signals long-term opportunities in the renewable energy value chain, including engineering, construction, technology supply, and maintenance services. It also provides reassurance that Namibia is working to build a stable and sustainable energy environment that can support industrial growth and attract future investment.
The commissioning of Omburu BESS in 2026 will mark a milestone in Namibia’s path toward a greener economy, aligning infrastructure development with the nation’s strategic energy goals.
