Namibia Submits Brandberg Dâures for UNESCO World Heritage Recognition. Namibia has formally submitted the Brandberg Dâures National Monument Area Dossier to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, seeking inscription on the World Heritage List. The submission, made on 29th January 2026, marks a significant step for the country in promoting its natural and cultural heritage.
Brandberg Dâures has been nominated as both a natural and cultural site, highlighting its exceptional geological features and rich historical significance. The dossier was prepared entirely by Namibian heritage professionals, a first for the country, reflecting growing national expertise in heritage management. Namibia asserts that Brandberg Dâures demonstrates Outstanding Universal Value, a key criterion for UNESCO recognition.
The submission was made by Ambassador Sabine Böhlke-Möller, Permanent Delegate of Namibia to UNESCO, alongside Ms. Erica Ndalikokule, Director of the National Heritage Council of Namibia, and other members of the Permanent Delegation. Their joint effort underscores Namibia’s commitment to safeguarding its heritage assets and promoting them on the global stage.
Namibia currently has two sites inscribed on the World Heritage List: Twyfelfontein and the Namib Sand Sea. With less than 12% of UNESCO World Heritage properties located in Africa, Brandberg Dâures’ nomination represents an important milestone for both Namibia and the continent. The process was supported by the Africa World Heritage Fund, which provided guidance and technical assistance during the dossier preparation.
If inscribed, Brandberg Dâures would join a select group of sites recognized for their global significance, bringing attention to Namibia’s unique landscapes, biodiversity, and cultural history. The country’s heritage authorities are optimistic that the nomination will strengthen conservation efforts, promote sustainable tourism, and highlight Namibia’s role in Africa’s cultural and natural legacy.
