N$57 Million Investment Targets Classroom Congestion in Erongo. The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture has committed N$57 million to reduce classroom overcrowding in the Erongo Region, with major school construction projects underway in Henties Bay and Swakopmund. On 6 May 2026, Minister Dr. Sanet L. Steenkamp visited key sites to assess progress and reaffirm the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education.
In Henties Bay (Extension 7), the Minister inspected the construction of a new school valued at N$7.2 million. Phase 1 began in August 2024, with Phase 2 scheduled for October 2025 and final completion expected by October 2026. Once finished, the facility will feature 12 classrooms, two science laboratories, a computer laboratory, an administration block, and ablution facilities. The development is expected to significantly ease overcrowding in the growing coastal town.
In Swakopmund’s DRC settlement, the Minister visited the site of new primary and secondary school projects valued at approximately N$50 million. The development will deliver 27 standard classrooms, 26 high school classrooms, science and computer laboratories, and administration blocks. Currently, learners in the DRC community rely on nearby schools, making this project critical to improving access to education closer to home. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2026
Minister Steenkamp emphasized that investments in infrastructure are essential to ensuring equitable access to education and reducing pressure on existing schools. The projects form part of a broader national effort to address classroom congestion and provide learners with conducive environments for academic success.
The combined investment reflects the Ministry’s commitment to tackling overcrowding while laying the foundation for long-term educational development in Namibia. By expanding facilities in rapidly growing communities, the government aims to strengthen the education system and ensure that every learner has the opportunity to thrive.
