Namibia Prepares for Africa’s First Nuclear-Test-Ban Exercise

Namibia Prepares for Africa’s First Nuclear-Test-Ban Exercise. On 6 May 2026, the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME) hosted an information-sharing session in collaboration with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) to highlight Namibia’s role in the upcoming Integrated Field Exercise 2026 (IFE26). The event, held at the Ministry’s auditorium, brought together staff members to deepen understanding of the country’s responsibilities in hosting one of the most significant international exercises in nuclear non-proliferation.

Presentations underscored the importance of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which prohibits nuclear explosions worldwide. Namibia signed the treaty in 1996 and ratified it in 2001, reaffirming its commitment to global peace and security. The IFE26 exercise is scheduled to take place from 5 October to 20 November 2026 in the Erongo Region, specifically in the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

This marks the first time the Integrated Field Exercise will be held in Africa, following earlier editions in Kazakhstan (2008) and Jordan (2014). The large-scale simulation is designed to test inspection methodologies, operational readiness, and technical capabilities under the CTBT verification regime. It will involve systems such as the International Monitoring System and on-site inspections, ensuring that verification tools remain effective and credible.

The information-sharing session was described as a milestone in Namibia’s preparations, reinforcing the country’s role in advancing international cooperation and nuclear non-proliferation. By hosting IFE26, Namibia positions itself as a key partner in strengthening global peace and security frameworks.

The Ministry emphasized that the exercise is not only about technical readiness but also about demonstrating Namibia’s commitment to international obligations. Staff engagement and awareness are seen as vital to ensuring the success of the exercise and to showcasing Namibia’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to global initiatives.

As preparations continue, IFE26 is expected to highlight Namibia’s leadership in Africa on issues of disarmament and verification, while providing valuable lessons for the international community.
