New Classrooms Strengthen Learning Environment in Ohangwena

New Classrooms Strengthen Learning Environment in Ohangwena. The Ohangwena Region has received a major boost in education infrastructure following the official handover of 20 newly built classrooms by the Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Hon. Dr. Sanet Steenkamp, on 19 November 2025. The facilities, valued at N$8 million, were unveiled at Shakela Shimbwa Primary School in the Epembe Circuit.

Five schools benefited from this phase of development: Shakela Shimbwa Primary School, Mateus Nakatumbe Primary School, Ohamalila Primary School, Festus Ikanda Primary School, and Ohamaala Primary School. Each institution received new classrooms equipped with ablution facilities aimed at improving learning conditions and reducing overcrowding.

The additions form part of a broader national effort to enhance educational infrastructure. In 2025 alone, seven new schools were established, with five receiving full Basic Education Facilities. Speaking at the event, Dr. Steenkamp reaffirmed Government’s commitment to creating dignified and supportive learning environments.

“This Government is present, this Government is responsive, and this Government is delivering for its people,” she said. The Minister highlighted that the new classrooms will contribute to improved teacher–learner interaction and better academic outcomes, while restoring a sense of dignity among learners who previously studied in overcrowded conditions.

She also emphasized the critical importance of early childhood and foundational learning, noting that the period from birth to age eight has a lasting effect on a child’s academic development and overall well-being. Strengthening facilities for these early grades, she said, lays a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

Dr. Steenkamp extended gratitude to regional education officials, school leaders, contractors, traditional authorities, teachers, and parents whose cooperation enabled the successful completion of the project. She urged communities to safeguard the new infrastructure.

“These schools belong to you. Protect them. Safeguard them. Use them wisely and ensure their sustainability for the generations that follow,” she said
