Windhoek Leaders Experience Commuter Struggles Firsthand in Public Transport Ride

Windhoek Leaders Experience Commuter Struggles Firsthand in Public Transport Ride. In an unprecedented show of solidarity, the City of Windhoek’s Public Transport Division hosted the Leadership in Motion: A Commuter Experience Ride on Tuesday morning, bringing policymakers and city leaders face to face with the daily realities of public transport users.

The journey began at Siyanda Bus Stop in Goreangab and followed the familiar Independence Avenue route to the Ministry of Works and Transport. For thousands of residents, this daily commute is often marked by long queues, crowded buses, and safety concerns.

Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Hon. Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele, joined the ride disguised as a domestic worker. Boarding a bus as early as 04:00, she described the experience as an eye opener, noting the unsafe conditions commuters endure, from walking in the dark to waiting for overcrowded buses.

Mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja echoed these sentiments, pointing out that women and children often shoulder the heaviest burden, covering long distances before even reaching a bus stop. Leaders also rode in a 33-year-old bus still in operation, underscoring the urgent need for investment in newer, safer vehicles.

Amid the challenges, the morning commute revealed a community hero: Perietha Burtze, who voluntarily manages order at the Siyanda stop by introducing a simple “numbering system” to ensure fairness and protect the elderly and vulnerable. Her efforts reflect the resilience and spirit of Windhoek’s people.

The experience has strengthened the leaders’ resolve to improve bus frequency, upgrade infrastructure, and expand an inclusive, reliable, and affordable public transport system.

For the City of Windhoek, this initiative was more than symbolic—it was leadership rooted in empathy, listening, and action, paving the way for a transport system that upholds dignity, safety, and opportunity for all.
