Namibia Launches Heritage Week to Celebrate and Preserve Cultural Legacy

Namibia Launches Heritage Week to Celebrate and Preserve Cultural Legacy. The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, through the National Archives of Namibia in partnership with the Museums Association of Namibia, officially launched Namibian Heritage Week on Wednesday, 17 September 2025. The celebration, which runs from 15 to 21 September, is a nationwide call to honour, preserve, and share the country’s diverse cultural traditions.

Delivering the keynote address, Ms. Sarah Negumbo, Acting Deputy Executive Director in the Ministry, unpacked the importance of this year’s theme: “Bahindi Belambi lye chizo Chetu” in Subia, meaning “Torchbearers of Our Heritage.” She described the torch as a symbol of knowledge, tradition, and continuity, emphasising that every Namibian carries the responsibility to safeguard and pass on cultural practices to future generations.

Negumbo further noted that the theme encourages active participation from citizens in celebrating their heritage, ensuring that Namibia’s cultural identity remains vibrant and relevant in a modern context. Heritage Week, she explained, is not only about reflection but also about engaging communities to keep traditions alive.

The launch ceremony featured cultural performances and exhibitions that brought the theme to life, highlighting Namibia’s living heritage through music, dance, and craft. These activities provided a platform for communities to showcase their unique cultural expressions while fostering intergenerational learning.

Namibian Heritage Week has grown into an important event on the national calendar, aimed at strengthening pride, unity, and cultural awareness. Beyond celebration, it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving traditional knowledge as part of the country’s development journey.
