Windhoek Faces Flash Flooding as Heavy Rains Continue. Since early January, Windhoek has experienced heavy rainfall, resulting in flash floods across the city. The Namibia Meteorological Services, in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister, has issued a weather warning for March 15-21, 2025, predicting moderate to heavy thunderstorms across multiple regions, including Khomas. Authorities have warned of localized flash floods, which may cause damage to property and infrastructure and pose risks to lives.
Between January and March 18, 2025, Windhoek emergency teams responded to 21 flood-related incidents, with Otjomuise’s 8de Laan Informal Settlement being the hardest hit, affecting over 280 households. As of March 18, 181 informal dwellings were relocated to Farm 508 in Goreangab to ensure safety.
A multi-disciplinary team, including officials from Human Settlement, Roads & Storm Water, Emergency Services, Disaster Risk Management, and City Police, is on standby to assist affected communities and relocate vulnerable residents to safer areas if needed.
Authorities urge residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and avoid crossing flooded roads and riverbeds. High-risk areas include Khomasdal, Katutura, Hochland Park, Klein Windhoek, and Olympia.
