NBL and NUST Unite for Student-Led Road Safety Campaign. Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) have joined forces to launch a new road safety initiative targeting drinking and driving among young people. The campaign, titled #SmartChoicesSaveLives, was officially unveiled on 8 August at the NUST Mining Auditorium.
Backed by a N$200,000 investment from NBL, the project is spearheaded by NUST’s Transport and Procurement Society. It seeks to empower students to take an active role in shaping safer road practices through peer-led education, interactive workshops, and immersive virtual reality experiences designed to highlight the dangers of driving under the influence.
NBL Managing Director Waldemar von Lieres described the collaboration as an extension of the company’s long-standing commitment to promoting road safety. “This is more than a partnership—it’s a commitment to awareness, empowerment, and action,” he said. He noted that the company continues to advocate for zero tolerance towards drinking and driving while also expanding its range of non-alcoholic beverages.
The initiative is aligned with NBL’s Brewing a Better Namibia strategy and its values of caring for people and the planet. It builds on nearly two decades of support for the national “Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign and demonstrates the company’s continued investment in sustainable partnerships.
Prof. Efigenia Semente, Executive Dean at NUST, welcomed the partnership, highlighting the importance of giving students a platform to influence positive change. “This partnership shows the power of collaboration and gives students the confidence to lead change in their communities,” she said.
The campaign will run throughout the 2025 academic year with continued backing from NBL and NUST faculty. Students are encouraged to take part and carry forward the central message that responsible choices on the road can save lives.
