NANSO Kunene Issues Firm Warning on Teacher Conduct and Safety at School Sports Events

NANSO Kunene Issues Firm Warning on Teacher Conduct and Safety at School Sports Events. The Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO) in the Kunene Region has issued a strong caution to teachers, team managers, and school sports officials regarding conduct and learner safety during school sporting activities.

Speaking in his role as NANSO Regional Secretary of Sports, Martinez Tjitjekura Kavetu stressed that educators who accompany learners to sports tournaments carry a significant duty of care. He warned that any form of irresponsible behaviour undermines learner safety and the integrity of school sports.

Kavetu stated that the consumption of alcohol by teachers during school tournaments is unacceptable and unprofessional. He said educators are entrusted with protecting, guiding, and supervising learners, and any conduct that compromises this responsibility places learners at serious risk.

He further called on schools and education authorities to take firm disciplinary action against any teacher found neglecting their supervisory duties while overseeing learners at sporting events. According to Kavetu, accountability is essential to maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe environment for learners.

In addition to conduct-related concerns, NANSO highlighted the importance of adequate medical preparedness at school sports tournaments. Kavetu urged all school sports organisers in the Kunene Region to ensure that proper medical support is available at every event. He noted that this should include medical personnel from nearby hospitals or clinics, or at minimum, trained first-aid responders capable of handling injuries and emergencies.

Kavetu emphasized that learner health and safety must remain a priority, particularly during competitive sporting activities where the risk of injury is higher.

Beyond sports, NANSO also encouraged schools across the region to participate in the upcoming NANSO Regional Debate Competition scheduled for March. Kavetu said the initiative plays an important role in improving learners’ English communication skills, confidence, critical thinking, and public speaking abilities.

NANSO reaffirmed its commitment to promoting discipline, safety, academic excellence, and responsible sports development in schools, calling on educators, administrators, parents, and sports organisers to work together in the best interests of learners.

“Learners come first. Their safety, discipline, and development must never be compromised,” Kavetu said.
