Namibia’s Ministry of Health Receives First Direct Shipment of Medicines from Manufacturers

Namibia’s Ministry of Health Receives First Direct Shipment of Medicines from Manufacturers. The Ministry of Health and Social Services has received its first direct shipment of essential medicines and clinical supplies, marking a significant step toward improving the efficiency and reliability of Namibia’s medical supply chain.

The delivery, which arrived at the Central Medical Stores, is part of the Ministry’s new direct procurement initiative, allowing essential medicines to be sourced directly from manufacturers rather than through intermediaries. The first batch, supplied by Pfizer, represents the beginning of ongoing shipments expected over the coming weeks and months.

Dr. Kandetu, who received the initial shipment on behalf of the Executive Director, said the arrival of these medicines underscores the Ministry’s commitment to restoring stock levels and ensuring uninterrupted access to healthcare. “The Ministry is working hard to restore stock levels at the Central Medical Stores to over 80%. This first tranche of deliveries is a testament to the Ministry’s commitment. More shipments are on the way, with the next expected to arrive by 29 October 2025,” he said.

Health authorities highlighted that the direct procurement approach is intended to enhance transparency, reduce delays, and secure quality medicines at better value for Namibians. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the nation’s health system and prevent frequent shortages that have historically affected healthcare facilities across the country.

Speaking on the impact of the initiative, Dr. Luvindao emphasized the Ministry’s goal of building a more resilient healthcare system. “We are operating with a renewed sense of purpose to strengthen the nation’s health system. It is possible to reach a point where one does not pick up a newspaper and read about drug shortages in health facilities every other day. That is what we are working towards because it directly translates to a better quality of life for all citizens,” she said.
