Namibian Schools Receive Cybersecurity Awareness Training to Strengthen Online Safety

Namibian Schools Receive Cybersecurity Awareness Training to Strengthen Online SSafety. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, in collaboration with Salt Essential IT, conducted a cybersecurity awareness session today at Shela Secondary School and Kongo Combined School in the Okongo Constituency, Ohangwena Region. The initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to promote cyber hygiene, enhance national cybersecurity, and combat cybercrime in line with Namibia’s National Digital Strategy.

During the sessions, learners and teachers received guidance on safe online practices. Grace Katjivena, Marketing and Communication Officer at Salt Essential IT, emphasized the importance of protecting personal information and being vigilant against online impersonation. She also provided practical tips for navigating digital platforms safely, encouraging responsible online behaviour among students.

The Ministry highlighted that educating young people on cybersecurity is critical in building a digitally responsible generation. As Namibia continues to expand access to internet services and digital technologies, awareness initiatives like this aim to reduce vulnerabilities and foster a culture of online safety.

The programme reflects a growing focus on integrating cybersecurity education into schools, ensuring that learners understand the risks associated with digital spaces and are equipped to respond appropriately. Teachers attending the sessions were also encouraged to share these practices within their classrooms, creating a ripple effect of awareness throughout the school community.

This collaboration between government and the private sector demonstrates the value of partnership in advancing national objectives. By targeting schools, the Ministry and Salt Essential IT aim to cultivate informed digital citizens capable of contributing to a secure online environment.

Namibia’s ongoing cybersecurity efforts underscore the importance of proactive education, particularly among youth, as the country strengthens its digital infrastructure and combats emerging cyber threats.
