Namibia Signals Renewed Focus on Nuclear Energy Development at Davos Forum. Namibia is intensifying efforts to explore the development of a nuclear energy industry as part of a broader national strategy aimed at strengthening energy security, diversifying the mining sector, and adding value to the country’s uranium resources.
The remarks were made by the Director-General of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Kaire Mbuende, during a high-level session titled The Future of Nuclear Energy in Africa at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday.
According to Mbuende, Namibia’s interest in nuclear energy forms part of ongoing policy discussions around long-term energy planning and industrial development. The country is recognised as one of the world’s producers of uranium, and discussions around nuclear energy are linked to considerations on how mineral resources can support broader economic objectives.
The Davos session brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and energy experts to examine the role of nuclear energy in Africa’s energy mix, including its potential contribution to energy security and low-carbon power generation. Mbuende’s participation placed Namibia within these continental-level conversations.
Namibia’s energy sector continues to face the challenge of balancing supply and demand, while the mining sector remains a significant contributor to the national economy. In this context, nuclear energy is being examined as part of wider strategic planning efforts rather than as a standalone initiative.
The NPC plays a coordinating role in national development planning, and its engagement at the World Economic Forum reflects Namibia’s participation in global policy dialogues on energy and economic development. Discussions at the forum focused on future pathways, regulatory considerations, skills development, and infrastructure requirements related to nuclear energy.
Mbuende indicated that Namibia’s approach to nuclear energy aligns with broader goals of economic diversification and value addition within the mining sector. No specific project timelines or implementation frameworks were outlined during the session.
The engagement at Davos underscores Namibia’s continued involvement in international platforms where long-term development priorities, including energy options, are discussed alongside global partners and stakeholders.
