Namibia Marks International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day with Renewed Commitment to Universal Health Access. The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MHSS) joined the global community on 5 November 2025 to commemorate International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day, highlighting Namibia’s efforts to improve access to physical rehabilitation services.
The commemoration underscored the vital role of prosthetics and orthotics in restoring mobility, independence, and quality of life for individuals with physical impairments. Prosthetics focuses on replacing missing body parts, while orthotics provides assistive devices to support, align, or correct physical functions affected by injury or illness.
These disciplines combine biomedical engineering and clinical rehabilitation to address a wide range of conditions—from amputations to neuromusculoskeletal disorders—helping patients regain confidence and reintegrate into work, school, and daily life.
The Ministry emphasized that rehabilitation and assistive technology services are more than medical interventions; they are transformative tools that promote independence, resilience, and social participation. By offering education, training, and ongoing support, the MHSS aims to help people manage their conditions effectively and remain active contributors to society.
Currently, Namibia provides free prosthetic and orthotic services at the referral hospital in Windhoek, as well as at Oshakati and Rundu intermediate hospitals. Four additional district hospitals offer limited services due to equipment and staffing constraints. However, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to expanding these services across all regions through the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) policy launched on 13 October 2025.
This decentralization plan is expected to shorten waiting times and reduce travel distances for patients seeking rehabilitation services. The Ministry reiterated its dedication to ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing essential health care.
