Namibia Explores Faster Rollout of Telecom Infrastructure

Namibia Explores Faster Rollout of Telecom Infrastructure. Senior government officials and industry stakeholders recently convened to discuss ways to accelerate the rollout of telecommunications infrastructure across the country. The meeting brought together Hon. Emma Theofelus, Minister of Information and Communication Technology, and Hon. James Sankwasa, Minister of Urban and Rural Development, alongside the Deputy Ministers of ICT and Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

A key issue raised during the discussions was the lengthy approval process required to install telecommunications towers and related infrastructure. Stakeholders highlighted that delays are often experienced in urban areas, on private land, and in cases where multiple institutions are involved in granting clearances.

Concerns were also expressed about the high cost of land rentals and inconsistent pricing, which can slow down infrastructure development and negatively affect service delivery. Participants called for a more standardized and affordable approach to pricing, particularly for infrastructure that supports public communication services.

The meeting further emphasized the need to streamline environmental and regulatory clearances, reducing duplication and unnecessary delays. Stakeholders agreed that simplifying these processes would help speed up deployment and improve efficiency.

Participants stressed that telecommunications infrastructure should be treated as a national development priority, given its importance in improving connectivity, expanding digital access, and supporting economic growth. Enhanced infrastructure would not only strengthen Namibia’s digital economy but also improve access to services for communities across both urban and rural areas.

The dialogue reflects ongoing efforts by government and industry leaders to align on strategies that will ensure faster, fairer, and more sustainable expansion of Namibia’s telecommunications network.
