Namibia Activates Central Securities Depository, Advancing Capital Market Modernisation

Namibia Activates Central Securities Depository, Advancing Capital Market Modernisation. The Namibia Securities Exchange (NSX), in partnership with the Bank of Namibia (BoN) and under the regulatory oversight of the Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority (NAMFISA), has announced the official go-live of the Central Securities Depository Limited (CSD). The development marks a major step forward in strengthening and modernising Namibia’s financial market infrastructure.

The activation of the CSD signals the country’s shift away from paper-based securities processes toward a fully electronic environment. Through this system, securities will now be held in electronic form, improving efficiency and reducing operational risks associated with physical certificates.

According to the NSX, the CSD is designed to streamline several core functions within the capital markets. These include electronic clearing, settlement, and registration of securities, as well as the management of corporate action events such as dividend payments and interest distributions. The integration of these processes is expected to simplify transactions for market participants while enhancing transparency within the financial system.

The transition to an electronic depository also introduces improved accuracy and reliability in maintaining securities records. By removing manual handling and physical documentation, the CSD supports faster settlement cycles and reduces the likelihood of errors or delays.

The collaboration between NSX and the Bank of Namibia, supported by NAMFISA’s regulatory oversight, reflects a coordinated national effort to upgrade Namibia’s capital markets infrastructure. The new system positions the country in line with international standards commonly used in global financial markets.

With the CSD now operational, institutions, investors, and market intermediaries will be able to engage in a more efficient and secure trading and settlement environment. The launch is considered a foundational step toward fostering deeper capital market participation and improving the overall functioning of Namibia’s financial ecosystem.
