Massive Transformer Convoy Passes Through Windhoek en Route to Gerus Substation. A massive convoy transporting a refurbished high-voltage power transformer to NamPower’s Gerus Substation outside Otjiwarongo passed through the City of Windhoek today, drawing attention from employees and curious onlookers.
The convoy made its way along Nelson Mandela Avenue, joining Robert Mugabe Avenue before heading toward NamPower’s Brakwater Depot outside Windhoek. The transformer, refurbished at Eskom Rotex Industries, is part of NamPower’s ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity supply network.
The convoy, stretching approximately 100 metres and consisting of multiple trucks, is travelling at an average speed of 25 km/h, covering about 80 kilometres per day. Due to its size and slow pace, the operation has become a spectacle for residents along the route.
NamPower confirmed that the convoy will remain stationed at Brakwater over the weekend before continuing its journey to the Gerus Substation next week. The Gerus facility, located outside Otjiwarongo, plays a critical role in Namibia’s power transmission system, and the arrival of the refurbished transformer is expected to enhance its operational capacity.
Employees from NamPower joined members of the public to witness the procession, underscoring the significance of the project for both the company and the wider community. The safe transport of such large-scale equipment requires careful coordination, and NamPower has assured stakeholders that all necessary precautions are being taken.
The transformer’s relocation marks another step in Namibia’s efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure, ensuring reliable electricity supply to support economic growth and development.
