Mariental Holds Mass Memorial for Crash VVictims. The Mariental community gathered in solemn unity on Wednesday at the town’s Sports Field for a mass memorial service honoring the 16 lives lost in a tragic crash that occurred on Saturday. The service brought together grieving families, friends, colleagues, and residents, alongside national leaders who came to pay their respects.

The ceremony was attended by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Deputy Prime Minister Natangwe Ithete, and several cabinet ministers, including Albert Kawana, Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, and Lucia Iipumbu, Minister of Industrialisation and Trade. Regional and local leaders also stood in solidarity, among them Hardap Governor Riaan McNab and Mariental Mayor Cherien Kock.

Representatives from Namibia’s security institutions were also present, with Inspector General of the Namibian Police Joseph Shikongo and Commissioner General of the Namibia Correctional Service Raphael Tuafeni Hamunyela attending alongside senior commissioners and officers. Their presence underlined the national significance of the tragedy and the shared mourning across communities.

The memorial service reflected a spirit of unity and collective grief, as hymns, prayers, and tributes filled the stadium. For families and loved ones, the gathering served as both a remembrance of those who were lost and a demonstration of the nation’s support during a time of profound sorrow.
