City of Windhoek and Namibia Breweries Explore Strategic Sustainability Partnership

City of Windhoek and Namibia Breweries Explore Strategic Sustainability Partnership. A City of Windhoek delegation, led by Mayor Cllr. Ndeshihafela Larandja, paid a courtesy visit to Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) in the Northern Industrial Area today to explore areas of collaboration with one of Namibia’s largest manufacturers.

The visit, hosted by NBL Managing Director Waldemar von Lieres, included a tour of the brewery’s production facilities with a strong focus on its sustainability initiatives. NBL has significantly reduced its water consumption, now using approximately four liters of water to produce one liter of beer, representing a 50 percent improvement in efficiency. In addition, the company has invested in renewable energy solutions, incorporating both solar and biomass into its operations to reduce its carbon footprint.

Mayor Larandja commended NBL for its leadership in sustainable manufacturing, calling the brewery a source of national pride with iconic Namibian brands such as Windhoek Lager and Tafel Lager. She emphasized the importance of partnerships between the City of Windhoek and the private sector in addressing pressing challenges.

Discussions during the visit centered on opportunities for collaboration in tackling Windhoek’s water scarcity, improving waste management, and expanding the adoption of renewable energy solutions. Both parties agreed that such cooperation could support broader economic development while strengthening environmental resilience.

NBL’s initiatives position it as a potential model for how Namibian businesses can align growth with sustainability. For the City of Windhoek, fostering partnerships with industry leaders is seen as a practical step toward addressing resource constraints and supporting long-term urban development.
