Kayla Duchaine Makes Historic Debut for Namibia at Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. Namibia has officially marked its presence on the global gymnastics stage, with 15-year-old Kayla Duchaine representing the nation for the first time at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The event drew over 370 young athletes from across the world, and Duchaine competed in all four rhythmic gymnastics apparatus categories: hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon. She placed 64th in ribbon, 67th in both hoop and ball, and 68th in clubs—a promising debut for the Namibian athlete.
Despite limited resources and training challenges at home, Duchaine’s elegant performances drew praise from international judges and spectators. Her composure and skill were widely noted, with many calling her a gymnast to watch in future competitions.
Also representing Namibia was Britt Adonis-Byl, president of the Namibian Rhythmic Gymnastics section and an FIG-certified judge. She officiated at the event and highlighted the importance of international exposure for Namibian gymnasts.
In recognition of their debut, Namibia was presented with the New Stage Award by the FIG. The award celebrates countries entering the championship’s individual competition for the first time. Namibia received the honour alongside seven other nations.
Head coach Eleonora Dobreva Karamfilova, of Elite Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, accepted the award on Namibia’s behalf. “This marks a new chapter for our sport. Kayla has opened a door, and now it’s up to us to keep it open for future athletes,” she said.
