Kavango West Farmers Receive Support to Strengthen Horticulture Sector. Kavango West Regional Governor Verna Sinimbo on Monday handed over agricultural materials valued at N$1.5 million to 19 local horticulture farmers, marking a key milestone in the region’s agricultural development efforts. The donation was made possible through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as part of an ongoing initiative to boost local food production and support small-scale farmers.
The handover ceremony, held in Nkurenkuru, saw farmers receive essential farming inputs, including wheelbarrows, seeds, garden tools, solar panels, water tanks, and irrigation pipes. These resources are intended to enhance productivity, improve irrigation practices, and promote sustainable horticultural activities across the region.
Governor Sinimbo highlighted the importance of such support for local farmers, noting that access to quality agricultural materials can significantly improve yields and strengthen livelihoods. “This initiative aligns with our regional strategy to empower smallholder farmers, increase food security, and create opportunities for economic growth within our communities,” she said.
Farmers expressed gratitude for the assistance, acknowledging how the provision of tools and equipment would help them expand production, reduce manual labour, and adopt more efficient farming techniques. The integration of solar panels and water storage solutions is expected to enhance irrigation efficiency, particularly in areas facing water scarcity challenges.
The FAO’s contribution forms part of a broader effort to support Namibia’s horticulture sector, improve resilience against climate variability, and encourage sustainable farming practices. By equipping farmers with modern tools and inputs, the programme aims to strengthen local food systems, support rural economies, and foster entrepreneurship within the agricultural sector.
