Government Invests in New ICT Infrastructure to Expand Connectivity. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has announced fresh funding dedicated to expanding access to digital services in Namibia. Speaking at the Chief Regional Officers quarterly engagement in Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region, interim Executive Director Linda Aipinge-Nakale confirmed that the government has approved resources for the construction of Radio Access Network (RAN) sites.
The new sites will specifically target under-served and un-served areas, with the aim of improving both mobile and broadcasting service coverage. This move comes as part of broader efforts to ensure equitable access to information and communication technology across the country.
According to Aipinge-Nakale, the expansion of ICT infrastructure will address barriers faced by communities with limited or no connectivity, thereby enhancing access to information, services, and opportunities. “These investments are aimed at bridging gaps in connectivity and improving accessibility for all citizens,” she stated.
The meeting in Katima Mulilo also served as a platform for MICT to update regional leaders on decentralisation initiatives and to align on priorities. Chief Regional Officers from across Namibia gathered to discuss practical approaches to collaboration between central government and local authorities, with a focus on service delivery and improved communication channels.
Participants highlighted the significance of ICT in enabling development, particularly in rural regions where reliable infrastructure remains limited. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional leaders to ensure that the new projects are implemented effectively and deliver tangible benefits to local communities.
With the construction of the RAN sites underway, the government’s investment signals a step toward reducing the digital divide and ensuring that no region is left behind in the country’s drive for inclusive development.
