From Fear to the Fast Lane: Trisha Mutumbulua’s Rise in International Swimming

From Fear to the Fast Lane: Trisha Mutumbulua’s Rise in International Swimming. Namibian swimmer Trisha Mutumbulua continues to gain recognition for her performances in the pool and her growing presence on the international stage. Last month, she was nominated for the Athlete of the Month award by Ligcabho Sports, an Eswatini-based athlete marketing and branding agency that supports athletes from Eswatini, South Africa and Namibia. Although she did not win the award, she received the highest number of peer votes from athletes across the three countries.

Ligcabho Sports communications director Bongani Shongwe said the agency decided to support Mutumbulua after closely following her progress over the past year, particularly after observing her performances at the Africa Aquatics Zone IV Swimming and Open Water Championships held in Eswatini in September 2025. At the championships, Mutumbulua won the 50m breaststroke in her age group and recorded several personal best times in other events.

Shongwe explained that the Athlete of the Month initiative is designed to motivate athletes, promote sportsmanship and encourage cross-border interaction among competitors. According to Ligcabho Sports, 15 percent of the voting is conducted privately by fellow athletes, with Mutumbulua receiving the highest votes in that category.

Mutumbulua’s swimming journey began at a young age after her mother enrolled her at Dolphins Swimming Club to help her overcome a fear of water. Under the guidance of coach Janis Stergiadis, she developed her skills and progressed through the ranks. She made her national debut at the age of 13 when she represented Namibia at the Zone IV Swimming Championships in Malawi in 2018.

Her career has included appearances at multiple Zone IV Championships and the Region 5 Games, as well as achieving over 600 FINA points at the 2021 African Swimming Championships in Ghana. She later trained in Thailand under a World Aquatics scholarship before moving to Hungary, where she currently combines her swimming career with psychology studies.

Despite personal challenges, including the death of her father late last year, Mutumbulua remains committed to her academic and sporting pursuits, continuing to represent Namibia at international level.
