AEDU Conference 2026 Stresses Reliable Data as Foundation for AI in Electricity Distribution

AEDU Conference 2026 Stresses Reliable Data as Foundation for AI in Electricity Distribution. One of the key highlights of the Association of Electricity Distribution Undertakings (AEDU) Conference 2026 was a panel discussion on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Namibia’s electricity distribution industry.

Panelists, representing utilities and industry stakeholders, emphasized that the effective adoption of AI must begin with strengthening existing processes, digitising operations, and ensuring the availability of reliable data. While utilities acknowledge the potential benefits of AI, many institutions are still dependent on manual systems and paper-based processes, which limit the ability to implement advanced technologies.

The discussion highlighted that digitisation and modernisation of systems are critical steps toward building the digital infrastructure and technical capacity required to support AI-driven solutions. Panelists stressed that without these foundations, attempts to integrate AI would be premature and ineffective.

A central theme of the session was the importance of data quality. Speakers noted that AI systems are only as effective as the information they process, making accurate, well-structured, and accessible data essential for meaningful innovation. Reliable data was described as the cornerstone of any successful AI application in electricity distribution, enabling predictive maintenance, demand forecasting, and improved service delivery.

The panel also underscored the need for collaboration among utilities, regulators, and policymakers to create an enabling environment for digital transformation. By prioritising data management and system upgrades, Namibia’s electricity distribution industry can position itself to harness AI for improved efficiency and resilience.

The AEDU Conference 2026, currently underway at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, continues to bring together utilities, regulators, policymakers, and industry experts to deliberate on key issues affecting Namibia’s energy sector. The conference is scheduled to conclude on Friday, 13 March.
