Namibia Hosts Youth, Peace and Security WWorkshop. The National Youth Council of Namibia and the Namibia YPS Network, in partnership with the African Union Commission, convened a two-day Dual Capacity Building Programme and Technical Working Group meeting on the National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security (NAP-YPS) from 26 to 27 May 2026 in Windhoek.
Opening the session, Hon. Dr. Sanet L. Steenkamp, Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, emphasized that young people must be placed at the centre of peace and security efforts. She noted that youth are often the most affected by instability but also play a vital role in building lasting peace.
Ms. Patience Masua, Interim Executive Chairlady of the National Youth Council, described the NAP-YPS as a critical step toward ensuring meaningful youth participation in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, governance, and national development. She stressed that young people should be seen not only as beneficiaries of peace but as active partners and leaders in shaping a peaceful and inclusive Namibia.
The event brought together youth from diverse backgrounds, Members of the National Council Standing Committee on Home Affairs, Security, Constitutional and Legal Affairs, representatives from the African Union, and other stakeholders. Discussions focused on strengthening understanding of the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, mapping stakeholder consultations, and contributing to a monitoring framework linked to the YPS pillars.
Organizers highlighted that the outcomes of the workshop will support Namibia’s efforts to align with continental and global frameworks, including Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions.
