Namibia Marks Africa Day with Call for Sustainable Water and SSanitation. Namibians from all walks of life, together with diplomats accredited to Namibia by their respective countries and international organisations, gathered at the Parliament Gardens in Windhoek on Monday, 25 May 2026, to celebrate Africa Day.

This year’s celebrations were held under the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve Agenda 2063”, in alignment with the African Union’s 2026 focus.Delivering a keynote statement on behalf of President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations Selma Ashipala-Musavyi reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to Agenda 2063. She described the theme as timely, elevating water and sanitation as continental priorities and recognizing them as catalysts for economic transformation, climate resilience, public health, food security, and regional stability.

“To overcome our development challenges, and in return achieve the goals of Agenda 2063, Africa must continue to effectively leverage her resources,” Ashipala-Musavyi said.

She further emphasized the need for Africans to jointly confront common challenges in order to realize collective potential and achieve structural transformation. Her remarks highlighted the importance of reaffirming commitment to Pan-Africanism, solidarity, peace, security, and justice.

The celebrations included a tour of stands hosted by different African countries with diplomatic representation in Namibia, where guests sampled diverse culinary cuisines. The day was enriched with speeches and lively cultural displays showcasing Namibia’s and Africa’s rich diversity.

Organizers noted that Africa Day is not only a celebration but also a moment of reflection on the Africa We Want, as espoused in Agenda 2063 and its flagship projects, aimed at achieving economic independence and sustainable development.
