Viljoen’s Record-Breaking Throw Headlines Namibia Age Group Championships

Viljoen’s Record-Breaking Throw Headlines Namibia Age Group Championships. A standout performance in the discus event took centre stage at the recent Athletics Namibia Age Group Championships, where LWyk Viljoen delivered a remarkable throw of 53.73 metres to secure victory.

Competing at the Independence Stadium, Viljoen’s effort exceeded the Namibia School Sport Union’s existing record of 51.42 metres by more than two metres. The achievement marked one of the most notable moments of the competition, which brought together emerging athletes from across the country.

The championships featured over 300 participants representing 10 regions, competing across under-16, under-18, under-20, and under-23 categories. The event signaled a renewed emphasis on youth athletics development, offering competitors an opportunity to test their abilities in a structured and competitive environment.

It also marked the first time in several years that Athletics Namibia hosted the Age Group Championships as a standalone event. The addition of the under-16 category highlighted a focus on identifying and developing talent at an earlier stage.

The competition served a dual purpose as a qualifying platform for the upcoming Region 5 Games, scheduled to take place in Maputo in December. This follows the cancellation of the National Youth Games, making the championships an important pathway for athletes seeking regional competition opportunities.

Despite several strong performances, official records from the event cannot be ratified due to the poor condition of the stadium’s tartan track. Even so, athletes delivered impressive results, particularly in field events, where several competitors showcased high levels of performance.

Attention now turns to the Athletics Namibia Senior National Championships set for 24 and 25 April. Beyond that, athletes will be preparing for a series of international events, including the Southern Africa Confederation of Athletics under-18 and under-20 Championships in Mauritius, the World Junior Championships in Eugene, and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later in the year.
