Windhoek and Berlin Deepen Ties Ahead of Solar Centre Launch

Windhoek and Berlin Deepen Ties Ahead of Solar Centre Launch. A high-level delegation from Germany met with Windhoek city leadership on Tuesday morning, reinforcing long-standing ties between the two partner cities ahead of a major renewable energy milestone.

Michael Biel, State Secretary in the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy, and Public Enterprises, paid a courtesy call to Sakarias Uunona at the city’s municipal offices. He was accompanied by Thorsten Hutter and a delegation of senior representatives.

The meeting brought together the mayor, city councilors, and Moses Matyayi just hours before the planned launch of the Windhoek Solar Centre. The project has been supported by the German capital, Berlin, as part of an ongoing sister-city relationship with Windhoek.

During the engagement, Mayor Uunona formally welcomed the delegation and reflected on the history of cooperation between the two cities. He noted that the relationship has been built over several years, with collaboration spanning multiple areas of development. He emphasized the importance of sustaining this partnership and building on its existing foundation.

Matyayi echoed similar sentiments, expressing appreciation for the continued cooperation that contributed to the completion of the Solar Centre. He highlighted the role of international partnerships in supporting city-level development initiatives.

Biel, in his remarks, described the visit as an opportunity to witness the outcomes of the collaboration firsthand. He acknowledged the significance of the partnership and reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment to supporting joint initiatives, particularly those focused on renewable energy and infrastructure development.

The visit forms part of broader engagements surrounding the launch of the Windhoek Solar Centre, which represents a key project under the sister-city arrangement. The interaction between the two delegations underscores ongoing diplomatic and developmental cooperation, with both sides signaling continued collaboration in future projects aimed at benefiting residents of Windhoek.
