Namibian Swimmer Irma van Rooyen Conquers Double Robben Island Crossing

Namibian Swimmer Irma van Rooyen Conquers Double Robben Island Crossing. Veteran Namibian swimmer Irma van Rooyen this week achieved a remarkable feat by completing a double Robben Island crossing in under six hours, braving icy waters and strong currents.

Van Rooyen described the Robben Challenge as one of the most demanding cold-water swims in the region. Conducted in water temperatures of approximately 13°C, the crossing forms the first leg of the Cape Triple Crown of open water swimming, which also includes the Cape Point swim and the False Bay crossing. Each event presents unique environmental and physical challenges, with cold exposure, currents, and distance being key factors.

Her husband, Cobus van Rooyen, explained to The Namibian Sport that she completed the swim without a wetsuit, in line with traditional marathon swimming rules. “This adds a significant physiological challenge, particularly in sustained exposure to cold water over extended periods,” he noted.

The Robben Island Swimming Challenge is a 7.4–11km open water swim from Robben Island to Cape Town, renowned for its extreme conditions, treacherous currents, and marine life. It is considered a pinnacle achievement in open water swimming, typically taking two to four hours and requiring extensive training, endurance, and mental resilience to overcome risks such as hypothermia, jellyfish, and potential shark encounters.

Van Rooyen is no stranger to endurance swimming. She previously completed a single Robben Island crossing in 2024, the UltraSwim 33.3km event in Croatia in 2025, and placed first in her age group at the OTB Oanob 5km event. Earlier in her career, she represented Namibia at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Her latest accomplishment cements her reputation as one of Namibia’s most resilient swimmers, showcasing both determination and the ability to push boundaries in the sport of open water swimming.
