Windhoek Mayor and Khomas Governor Renew Commitment to Joint Development Efforts. Newly appointed Sakarias Uunona, Mayor of Windhoek, paid a courtesy visit today to Sam Nujoma, Governor of Khomas Region, marking his formal introduction and reinforcing cooperation between their respective offices.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the City of Windhoek and the Khomas Regional Council, with both leaders acknowledging that their institutions serve the same communities and face shared development challenges. Mayor Uunona emphasised the importance of coordinated planning and resource sharing to address regional needs more effectively.
The two institutions have an existing partnership framework established through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019. Since then, cooperation has centred on key areas including affordable housing initiatives, sanitation services, safety and security, and public participation programmes.
During discussions, Mayor Uunona highlighted progress made under the affordable housing programme, noting that 520 housing units have been completed so far. He also indicated that the City plans to begin construction of flats in the Goreangab area as part of ongoing efforts to respond to rising housing demand.
Governor Nujoma welcomed the visit and reaffirmed his office’s willingness to continue working closely with the City to improve living conditions across the region. He also informed the delegation of an upcoming visit by a regional counterpart from Serbia aimed at exploring cooperation in water and agriculture.
The Governor invited the City to participate in these discussions, particularly in relation to ongoing water challenges and possible solutions linked to Goreangab Dam.
Both leaders expressed commitment to sustained collaboration, building on existing partnerships to support development priorities and enhance service delivery for residents across the region.
