New Namaqua Kalahari Children’s Hope Hostel Opens in Gochas

New Namaqua Kalahari Children’s Hope Hostel Opens in Gochas. Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, officially inaugurated the Namaqua Kalahari Children’s Hope Hostel on Tuesday in Gochas, Hardap Region.

The newly opened facility, valued at N$11.6 million, was donated by the Foundation of Barcelona, Spain. It is designed to provide safe, supportive accommodation for children in the region, addressing both educational and welfare needs.

The hostel comprises separate living quarters for 60 boys and 60 girls, ensuring privacy and a comfortable environment for all residents. In addition to sleeping facilities, the complex features a dining hall and a fully equipped kitchen to support meal preparation for the children.

To support the daily operations and wellbeing of residents, the hostel includes a superintendent’s house, staff flats, and sick bays. A dedicated study room has also been provided to promote learning and academic development among the children.

Minister Steenkamp highlighted the importance of such facilities in supporting educational access and improving the living conditions of children in rural areas. She noted that the hostel would provide not only accommodation but also a structured environment for study, recreation, and personal growth.

The donation by the Foundation of Barcelona reflects international support for child welfare and education in Namibia, bringing global attention to the development of infrastructure in underserved communities.

Local officials and community members attended the inauguration, marking the occasion as a milestone for child-centered initiatives in the Hardap Region. The hostel is expected to play a key role in supporting learners from surrounding areas, particularly those who travel long distances to attend school.

With the opening of the Namaqua Kalahari Children’s Hope Hostel, Gochas now has a modern facility dedicated to nurturing the next generation through safe accommodation, educational support, and holistic care, creating a foundation for improved learning outcomes and child development.
