TaRL Namibia Hosts Two-Day Workshop in Nkurenkuru to Strengthen Early Grade Learning

TaRL Namibia Hosts Two-Day Workshop in Nkurenkuru to Strengthen Early Grade Learning. The Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Namibia Programme is hosting a two-day workshop in Nkurenkuru aimed at strengthening early grade education through a learner-centred and evidence-based approach.

The workshop brings together education stakeholders to focus on practical strategies that support improved learning outcomes in foundational grades. TaRL is designed to assess learners’ current abilities and tailor instruction accordingly, allowing teaching to be aligned with individual learning levels.

Delivering welcoming remarks at the workshop, Kavango West Chief Education Officer for Diagnostic Advisory Training Services, Florian Tshimweetheleni, highlighted the importance of active participation throughout the sessions. He encouraged attendees to fully engage in practical exercises, activities, and open discussions, noting that shared learning and questioning play a key role in improving classroom outcomes.

Tshimweetheleni emphasised that hands-on engagement allows educators to better understand learner needs and apply appropriate teaching methods. He also underscored the value of collaboration among participants as a way to strengthen implementation at school level.

The TaRL Namibia Programme has already been rolled out in 10 regions across the country. In 2025, the programme reached 376 schools and benefited 42,606 learners. According to programme information shared during the workshop, the initiative aims to expand its reach in 2026, with a target of 500 schools and 60,000 learners nationwide.

The workshop in Nkurenkuru forms part of ongoing efforts to support educators with tools and methodologies that respond directly to learning gaps identified in early grades. Sessions are structured to allow participants to practise learner assessments, instructional techniques, and classroom grouping strategies aligned with the TaRL approach.

Organisers noted that the two-day programme is focused on strengthening capacity at the local level by ensuring that educators are equipped to implement learner-centred methods effectively.

The TaRL approach continues to be positioned as a structured framework for improving foundational learning by focusing on evidence-based instruction and regular assessment. The Nkurenkuru workshop contributes to the broader national rollout of the programme as it continues to expand across regions.

The workshop concludes with a review of key learnings and discussions on next steps for implementation within participating schools.
