Namibian Police Step Up Road Safety Checks at Okapuka Ahead of Post-Holiday Traffic. The Namibian Police Force intensified operations at the Okapuka Road Traffic Checkpoint in Windhoek on Sunday as motorists returned to the city following the holiday period. The checkpoint initiative aimed to enforce road traffic regulations and promote safe and responsible travel among drivers.
Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, spokesperson for NamPol, participated in the operation alongside other officers. She explained that the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard road users and monitor travel conditions, particularly during periods of increased traffic.
“These measures are designed to enhance road safety and ensure that motorists arrive safely and adhere to the rules of the road. Traffic is flowing smoothly, with an estimated 250 vehicles passing through the checkpoint per hour,” Deputy Commissioner Shikwambi said in a statement shared with Nampa.
The operation included checks for compliance with licensing, vehicle roadworthiness, and adherence to traffic regulations. Officers also engaged with motorists to raise awareness about safe driving practices and the importance of responsible behaviour on the roads.
NamPol has reiterated the importance of vigilance among drivers, especially as post-holiday traffic volumes increase. The initiative reflects the force’s commitment to reducing road accidents and ensuring public safety throughout the country.
Authorities have encouraged motorists to plan their journeys carefully, adhere to speed limits, and avoid distractions while driving. The checkpoint at Okapuka is expected to remain active in the coming days as part of a broader strategy to manage traffic and protect road users.
By combining enforcement with public awareness, the Namibian Police Force aims to create safer travel conditions for all motorists returning from holiday destinations, while reinforcing compliance with national traffic regulations.
