Lüderitz Youth Against Crime Community Policing Initiative Formally Launched

Lüderitz Youth Against Crime Community Policing Initiative Formally Launched. The Lüderitz Youth Against Crime Community Policing Initiative was officially established on 23 December 2025, marking a new collaborative effort between the Namibian Police Force and the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture.

The initiative brings together young people from Lüderitz, Aus, Oranjemund and Keetmanshoop, following specialised training focused on Juvenile Justice, Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Human Rights and Community Policing. A total of 28 young men and women participated in the training, which formed the foundation for the formal launch of the programme.

According to information released on the initiative, the training and establishment process was facilitated by Lüderitz Youth Officer Sakaria Kandenge, with operational support from the Namibian Police Force under the leadership of Inspector Lazarus !Gauaseb. The programme is designed to equip young participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to support community safety efforts in their respective areas.

Under the initiative, participating youth will work alongside law enforcement in activities that include community patrols, assisting at roadblocks, providing support during public events and promoting crime prevention awareness within communities. The approach aligns with the broader principles of community policing, which emphasise cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local residents.

Officials involved in the programme have underscored that youth involvement is central to its objectives, highlighting the role of young people as active contributors to crime prevention rather than passive observers. The initiative also reflects a shared responsibility model, recognising that effective crime prevention requires collaboration between communities, government institutions and law enforcement.

The launch of the Lüderitz Youth Against Crime Community Policing Initiative represents a structured platform for youth participation in public safety efforts. By combining training, coordination and on the ground engagement, the programme aims to strengthen relationships between young people and police while supporting safer communities across the //Karas Region.
