Namibia’s Deaflympic Team Faces Funding Crisis Ahead of Historic Tokyo Departure. Namibia’s first-ever Deaflympic team is on the verge of making history — but financial shortfalls threaten to ground their dream.A group of 18 Namibian deaf athletes is scheduled to compete at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics from 13–27 November, marking a major milestone for the nation’s sporting inclusion and representation on the global stage.
However, despite generous contributions from the Ministry of Sport, Nampower, and MTC, the Namibia Deaf Sports Federation (NDSF) confirmed that the team still faces a funding gap of N$400,000. The shortfall affects critical logistics such as meals in Japan, accommodation support, and return flight tickets.
With the team set to depart tomorrow, the urgency has prompted a nationwide call for donations and sponsorships. The NDSF appealed to both the private sector and the public to assist in ensuring the athletes can compete and return home safely.
“These athletes have trained with commitment and passion to represent Namibia with pride,” the Federation stated. “They embody resilience, unity, and the spirit of inclusion. We call on every Namibian to stand behind them.”
The Deaflympics, held every four years, bring together thousands of athletes from around the world, celebrating the talent and determination of the global deaf community. For Namibia, participation represents more than sport — it’s a statement of equality and opportunity.
