Namibia Launches Smart Grid Training Programme to Advance Energy Future

Namibia Launches Smart Grid Training Programme to Advance Energy Future. The Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME), in collaboration with the Namibian Energy Institute (NEI) and the African Energy Commission of the African Union (AFREC), has launched the Smart Grid Training Programme in Windhoek. The programme, which runs from 29 September to 3 October 2025, brings together regional and international experts to strengthen capacity and foster collaboration in sustainable electricity systems.

Smart Grid technologies are increasingly recognised as critical to Namibia’s energy transition. They provide the tools needed to integrate renewable energy, expand rural electrification, and enhance cybersecurity in vital infrastructure. By supporting real-time monitoring and efficient energy management, Smart Grids help advance the country’s national goal of universal energy access while contributing to long-term sustainable development.

Throughout the five-day training, technical experts from AFREC, EDF International, and ESKOM will deliver modules covering Smart Grid architecture, advanced metering, data analytics, renewable integration, and policy frameworks. The inclusion of policy discussions alongside technical training is expected to help participants better align engineering innovation with national energy strategies and regulatory needs.

For Namibia, the programme signals an important step in preparing the workforce and institutions for a future where energy systems are more intelligent, resilient, and inclusive. It also positions the country as a regional knowledge hub, encouraging shared learning across African nations in pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

The Smart Grid Training Programme highlights the growing importance of partnerships between government, academia, and international energy leaders. By equipping stakeholders with the skills and knowledge needed to implement modern energy systems, the initiative supports Namibia’s ambition to build an energy sector that is not only reliable but also globally competitive.
