Windhoek Strengthens Fire Safety With New Station, Equipment, and Awareness Campaigns

To improve emergency access, especially in hard-to-reach informal settlements, the Emergency Services Division has acquired 4×4 ambulances. In addition, the city has secured an extra firefighting tanker to boost its firefighting capacity. These measures, officials said, aim to reduce response times and strengthen overall disaster preparedness.

Windhoek Strengthens Fire Safety With New Station, Equipment, and Awareness Campaigns. The City of Windhoek has unveiled a set of new initiatives designed to enhance fire safety and emergency response across the capital. Speaking at a public engagement meeting with residents of Katutura Central Constituency on Sunday, city officials confirmed the allocation of land in Havana for the construction of a new fire station.

As part of its community outreach, the city also introduced a new household safety tool—a battery-operated smoke detector with a lifespan of up to 10 years. Priced at approximately N$400, the device is not mandatory but is strongly encouraged by the Fire Brigade as a proactive measure to prevent fire-related tragedies. Residents were further advised to consider fire-retardant paint to slow the spread of flames in the event of a household fire.

The city emphasized that these initiatives reflect its commitment to improving public safety and fostering a culture of prevention, especially in vulnerable areas. Officials noted that while infrastructure upgrades are critical, community involvement and awareness remain equally important in reducing fire risks.

Meanwhile, the City of Windhoek has invited all residents to participate in the commemoration of International Fire Safety Week, taking place from 6–10 October 2025 at the Fire Brigade Office. The week-long program will provide demonstrations, safety tips, and educational activities aimed at empowering households and businesses to adopt stronger fire safety practices.
