Windhoek Mayor Reports Over 26,000 Potholes Repaired and 3,000 Prepaid Water Meters Installed. Windhoek Mayor, Cllr Ndeshihafela Larandja, has announced significant progress in the city’s infrastructure and service delivery efforts, with more than 26,000 potholes repaired since February and over 3,000 prepaid water meters installed between 2020 and 2025. She made the remarks during a public engagement meeting on Saturday at Soweto Market in the John Pandeni Constituency.
Addressing residents, the Mayor outlined the city’s priorities, noting that upgrades to key road networks are underway to ease traffic congestion. Among the projects highlighted are the dualization of Auas Road from Truck Port to Mandume Ndemufayo, the upgrading of Peter Nanyemba Road (formerly Monte Christo Road), and improvements to Winnie Madikizela Mandela Road (formerly Otjomuise Road). In addition, several high-traffic intersections are scheduled for upgrades to improve safety and traffic flow.
On water supply, Larandja reported that the city has received 5,567 applications for prepaid water meters since 2020. Of these, 3,088 have been successfully installed, while 2,479 remain pending. She attributed delays mainly to tendering challenges but assured residents that the procurement of Unit Rate Contractors is underway to speed up installations.
The Mayor emphasized that repairing potholes and expanding access to prepaid water meters form part of Windhoek’s broader commitment to improving essential services, enhancing road safety, and addressing residents’ concerns. She further encouraged public participation in highlighting pressing community needs, stating that such forums are vital in ensuring accountability and transparency.
The engagement at Soweto Market forms part of ongoing initiatives by the city leadership to bring service delivery updates directly to communities and gather feedback from residents on challenges affecting their daily lives.
