Walvis Bay Strengthens Waste Collection with N$17 Million Truck Investment. The Municipality of Walvis Bay has enhanced its waste management capacity with the addition of five brand-new refuse compactor trucks, valued at a total of N$17 million. Each vehicle, supplied by the Pupkewitz Truck Division, cost N$3.4 million and is expected to significantly improve efficiency in refuse collection across the town.
According to the Municipality, the investment reflects Council’s commitment to restoring reliable waste management services for residents. The new trucks will allow the Solid Waste Management Division to resume its normal collection schedule from next week, reducing delays that have affected households and businesses in recent months.
Operators have undergone specialised training to ensure the trucks are handled safely and effectively. The vehicles come fitted with modern features designed to make refuse collection cleaner, safer, and more efficient. These include:
- A carrying capacity of up to 14 tons per trip.
- Compactor systems to crush rubbish, reducing trips to the dumpsite.
- Advanced bin lifters capable of lifting three household bins at once or one large industrial bin.
- Crew cabins fitted with safety belts and weather protection.
- Driver enhancements such as ABS brakes, power steering, and air conditioning.
- A built-in tank to trap liquid waste and prevent spillage on the streets.
“With these trucks, we are not only restoring our capacity but also improving the efficiency of our waste collection service,” the Municipality said in a statement. It added that investment in both equipment and personnel remains a priority to ensure Walvis Bay residents receive reliable and high-quality service.
The rollout of the new trucks is expected to bring noticeable improvements to waste collection and overall cleanliness in Namibia’s main port town.
